Creating an Eco-Friendly Laundry Room
Are you concerned about all the phosphates your laundry detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets are emitting into the environment? You do have alternatives, you just have to be willing to seek them. Many alternatives are sold online, and all you have to do is wait for them to arrive at your door.
Research has shown that the laundry room contains the highest level of toxins in the whole house. This statement is founded by the fact that your laundry cleaners all contain high amounts of toxic chemicals. Many have been linked to cancer and liver damage, and we apply it directly to our skin each and every day! Are you ready to start searching for an eco-friendly alternative?
You may find products on your local grocer's shelf claiming to be “environmentally friendly”, but beware. The manufacturer may have simply thrown the label onto the product. Read the label prior to purchasing the product, even compare it to other products on the shelf to ensure it is “green” before purchase.
Unfortunately, laundry products are not regulated, so the manufacturer can put anything on the label without liability. Always beware of products labeled “non-toxic,” “biodegradable,” or “organic.” The manufacturer is not even required to list ingredients on their product. A truly green product will list their products on the label. You can also google a product's MSDS (material safety data sheet)to see the warnings. Simply type manufacturer and MSDS to find this. Seventh Generation MSDS produced this page http://www.seventhgeneration.com/material-safety-data-sheets. Take a look. Manufacturers are required to provide these.
So, remember always look for a list of ingredients on the label. You also want to find a cleaner that lists what is not in the product as well. For example, “chlorine-free” or “no phospates.”
Here are simple ways to convert your laundry room:
- One option is to switch from liquid detergent to powder. You are paying extra for the manufacturer to add water and getting bulkier packaging. If you must use liquid, buy a concentrated formula.
- Second option is to quit using your dryer. Hang your clothes on a line instead. Sunlight is not only free to use, it is a natural bleaching agent and disinfects the clothes. If this is not an option for you, switch to a gas dryer. This will save you money and easier on the environment.
- Stay away from using dryer sheets, unless you find a natural alternative. They are not biodegradable and contain many health hazards. To reduce static clean, dry natural fibers separate from synthetic fibers.
Here are phrases you should look for on a label and AVOID:
- Any warning on the label stating “Danger,” “Poison”, “Warning,” or “Caution.” Those with danger or poison on them are the most harmful. Those with caution on them are least harmful, but should only be used if you are unable to find alternatives.
- Look for products bearing specific claims such as “no phosphates,” “plant derived,” or “biodegradable.” Make sure the product has a list of ingredients shown on the packaging. If you can find plant-based ingredients rather than petroleum-based, the product will be more eco-friendly.
This list is merely a start for you to convert your laundry room into a safer place. It will also be less harmful to the environment. Many of the green products will also save you money, remember you have your own water – why pay extra?
